Radio Spectra of Selected Compact Sources in the Nucleus of M 82
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have determined detailed radio spectra for 26 compact sources in the starburst nucleus of M82, between λλ 74 and 1.3 cm. Seventeen show low-frequency turnovers. One other has a thermal emission spectrum, and we identify it as an H II region. The low frequency turnovers are due to absorption by interstellar thermal gas in M82. New information on the AGN candidate, 44.01+595, shows it to have a non-thermal falling powerlaw spectrum at the highest frequencies, and that it is strongly absorbed below 2 GHz. We derive large magnetic fields in the supernova remnants, of order 1-2 (1 + k) 2/7 φ −2/7 milliGauss, hence large pressures in the sources suggest that the brightest ones are either expanding or are strongly confined by a dense interstellar medium. From the largest source in our sample, we derive a supernova rate of 0.016 yr −1 .

Clues on the nature of Compact Steep Spectrum radio sources from optical spectroscopy
New long-slit spectra are presented for a group of Compact-Steep-Spectrum (CSS) sources (i.e. powerful radio sources with sub-galactic size and steep spectral index at high radio frequencies) selected from the southern (δ < 10◦) 2-Jy sample of radio sources with redshift limit of z = 0.7. Their spectra are strong in emission lines (e.g. [O III]λ5007 and [O II]λ3727), as expected for such powerf...
متن کاملCompact steep - spectrum sources from the S 4 sample
We present the results of 5-GHz observations with the VLA A-array of a sample of candidate Compact Steep Spectrum sources (CSSs) selected from the S4 survey. We also estimate the symmetry parameters of high-luminosity CSSs selected from different samples of radio sources, and compare these with the larger sources of similar luminosity to understand their evolution and the consistency of the CSS...
متن کاملRadio study of X - ray clusters of galaxies I : A 3528 — a pre - merging cluster in the core of the Shapley Supercluster
As part of an extensive radio–IR–optical–X-ray study of ROSAT clusters of galaxies in the Hydra region we have observed the bimodal Abell cluster A3528, located in the core of the Shapley Supercluster (z ≃ 0.053), with the Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope at 843MHz and the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 1.4 and 2.4GHz. This is part I in a series of papers which look at the relatio...
متن کاملAn unbiased sample of bright southern Compact Steep Spectrum and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum Sources
Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are classes of compact, powerful, extragalactic objects. These sources are thought to be the earliest stages in the evolution of radio galaxies, capturing the ignition (or, in some cases, re-ignition) of the AGN. As well as serving as probes of the early stages of large-scale radio sources, these sources are good, stable, ...
متن کاملCompactness of Weak Radio Sources at High Frequencies
We have obtained 8.4 GHz VLBA observations of a 31-GHz complete sample of ∼ 100 sources between 10 and 100 mJy. The main goals of these observations are: to determine the angular size, radio spectra and identification for a weak sample of high frequency sources; to find the fraction of sources which have sufficiently compact emission for use as calibrators for VLBI observations; and for design ...
